Great sailing or wildlife watching...what's it to be?

web - tropical beach on yell shetlands dsc_0706 2Bright sunshine and blue skies greeted us when sticking our heads out of the companion way on Friday morning; brilliant start to another lovely cruising day in the Shetlands.

Program for the day was some otter watching in Otter Wick Bay, on the Isle of Yell, then a nice fine reach to the Outer Skerries, before sailing back to Lerwick, hopefully just in time for last orders at the pub.

With main and all foresails up, we had a leisurely sail up north to Yell, where we found 3 almost tropical beaches (white sand and turquoise waters included, the only thing missing was a palm tree and a rum punch!), but alas, no otters. So all fingers were crossed for our sail to the Outer Skerries, the most Eastern point of the Shetlands, where we should have a good chance of spotting whales and porpoises...

we had a fantastic sail to the Outer Skerries and back to Lerwick, but I can only conclude that we used up all our good luck on the terrific sailing, leaving no luck for the wildlife sightings...maybe it was to make up for that that we had a whole bunch of seals popping their heads up in welcome in the harbour of Lerwick.

We made last orders; early enough even for the crew to reminisce over a glass or two about their days on Polar Bear amidst these wonderful and welcoming islands.

Thanks to all for making this a fantastic trip!

Saturday was RNLI fund raising day, with a helicopter rescue demo and dunk the crew in the water challenges - see photoweb dsc_0727 2 cropped - rnli demo
