Go with the flow

Thursday 21 July, 1800 , between Husavik and Grimsey

Early morning saw us all up, enjoying Susan and Liv's brilliant breakfast!
The night before when they asked who did not want it the next morning, you
could hear a pin falling as the whole crew made sure not to make a sound to
prevent any confusion. Once you have tasted this delicious porridge, you
will never say no again!
That's right, I said porridge! Me, the most convinced
'I-don't-like-porridge-you-have-to-be-brought-up-in-a-Common-Wealth-country-to-like-it-me'
eating porridge...but this is no ordinary porridge: it is a base of
presoaked porridge oats, with grated apple, fresh strawberries and
blackberries over it, topped with some extra special granola and a dollop of
thick yoghurt...who would not love it?

The idea was to sail to Isafjord today, to make our crossing to Greenland
from there. But last night's weather update on the ice situation is making
it increasingly unlikely that we will be able to make it into Scoresby Sund
safely this trip. There is still too much big 'fast ice' (big big lumps of
ice or icebergs, some the size of the Isle of Wight) in and around the fjord
which means that even if we could make it in, there is a good chance we
could get locked in by the big flow of ice drifting along Greenland's East
coast. Not so nice.
Luckily the situation could change overnight, if only we could get a nice
little storm to blow through up there, to break up the ice.
So we're now on our way to Grimsey, the small island north of Iceland, which
is just within the Arctic Circle! From there we will sail on to Isafjord,
while continuing to monitor the weather. Hopefully we will set off from
there, weather permitting, to sail towards Greenland to do some iceberg
watching. Fingers crossed!
Our fantastic crew takes it all in their stride: they know there is nothing
we can do about it and luckily enough, everybody is happy to go with the
flow.

We did have a great afternoon, with a bunch of very splashy dolphins and
some more whale action!
A big humpback whale, jumping out of the water, doing a little show for not
just us, but also two of the whale watching boats out of Husavik.
Great show!
Since then, we've had two more whale calls, but us lot who were not on deck,
were just too late to catch more than a glimpse. We are getting very quick
though in getting lifejacket and something warm on, grab the camera and be
on deck. Could be our next competition if we timed it!
Not surprising we keep on seeing whales, as I found out today there are some
30.000 (!) whales on the Icelandic coasts. That is more than 10% of
Iceland's population of 290.000! We love seeing them, so keep then coming!
