Perfect parking: big boat in a small corner

nusfjord - lofoten - 0874Nusfjord (Nus = Kiss, can only be good!) was next – a tiny little fishing harbour in a narrow fjord, creating a perfect little natural harbour. The entrance to the bigger fjord is well hidden and without knowing it’s there, we might well have sailed past it. As we’re slowly motoring up the fjord, we’re surrounded by quiet, black mountains, rising straight up out of the water, making us all feel in awe of our surroundings. The water is black and calm, and without looking at the depth meter, you just know it’s depths are endless. Mother Nature has done pretty good over here!

When we draw up next to the narrow entrance to Nusfjord, we see a big fishing boat at the end of the high pillared dock where Polar Bear normally moors. As we get a better view, more and more fishing boats come into view, all moored up to the same dock, some even rafted up together. It’s a Sunday morning and the fishermen have their morning off...

Luckily enough we have the dinghy ready to launch from the davits and Mark and Boogie set off exploring the inner harbour, checking depths with the handheld depth sounder to see if we could maybe get Polar Bear on the small L-shaped pontoon further in.

They come back with a triumphant “we can get in!” followed by a softer “we think...”

There should be just enough room to manoeuvre the yacht into this tight spot and some quick tidal calculations show just enough depth, even at low water, but only if we dock the boat at a slight angle with the bow away from the dock…
It’s not going to be an easy park, but if anybody can do it, than it is Boogie.
As we slowly steer into the narrow entrance, more and more people stop on the dock to watch this big yacht come in and wonder where on earth they are going to park. While manoeuvring, we end up slowly moving towards one of the fishing boats and the local captain doesn’t seem very happy. Whether he’s afraid Boogie might hit him or just annoyed that he’ll have to manoeuvre out of the harbour going backwards, we don’t know as he rants in Norwegian... Grumpy man, about the only non friendly Norwegian we have encountered so far.

Boogie does a perfect job and parks the boat under applause from our crew and amazed faces amongst the onlookers. We should have sold tickets to the show! Most of the crew disappear to go kayaking around the fjord and the remaining ones set off with Boogie in the tender to do some more fishing, hunting for that elusive halibut. There has got to be some bounty out there, because one by one, the fishing boats on the dock disappear, leaving the village quiet and peaceful. The fishing party come indeed back happy and smiling: another good catch, this time we’re saving it for the BBQ!
