Whale of a time!!

Tuesday 19 July, Akureyri to Husavik

Within an hour of starting our first watch of the trip, we could shout out
'Whale!!' in a happy happy voice.
Most of the rest of the crew came up quickly and we all got treated to
almost an hour of whale acrobatics: two humpback whales, a younger and an
older one (mother and calf? well possible!), easily distinguishable because
of the colour of the back of their distinctive tails, one with a white
colouring and the other with a fully black tail. They just kept on going one
after the other: big blow, back out of the water, tail out and
disappearing...every time we thought that this was going to be the last
dive, a new water fountain was blown into the air...breathtaking...

We had only set off earlier that evening, after a busy day of procuring the
last provisioning, solving a couple of last minute problems (it is a boat
after all - if you're a sailor, you will know, it's not a question of
whether something will break, just what and when!) and getting everybody on
board and briefed.
We had about 12 hours to motorsail to Husavik, on the north coast of
Iceland, a bit further East once we would clear out of the long fjord that
Akureyri is situated on.
Daragh, our Irish crew who lives in China, works for a Dutch company and is
now coming sailing on an English boat, arrived around lunch time, while
Susan and Liv (from the UK) had arrived already earlier this morning from
Reykjavik where they stayed for a couple of nights.
With Mark and Robin, two old Polar Bear hands that have already featured
several times in these blogs, we were a perfect number of seven.
The watches were easily divided: Boogie with Robin, Mark with Daragh and
myself with Susan and Liv (the girlie watch).
Mark launched a competition straight away, to see who could come up with the
best watch names...needless to say we won hands down!
Okay, then, you can all be the judge of that: I'll give you the three names
and you can email us via the website to let us know who wins!
Here goes: Appliance of Science (for the watch with the two scientists),
Fishy Tails or Whale of a Time! You decide!

The rest of the night (well, the three hours that were left) got lost in a
too short bit of sleep...we arrived in a very quiet harbour at 7am.
A sight for sore eyes though, as there were a good number of old fashioned
big wooden sailing ships in harbour for the Sail Husavik Festival! All
dressed in colours, the harbour made a beautiful sight in the early morning
sunlight...
We tied up alongside one of the ships and got ourselves organised for a day
of exploring Husavik...more about that later!
