Caribbean Holiday Season : Windward cruising

With a goodbye to the ARC parties and our new friends, Star Chaser set off for her 1st Caribbean cruise!

After a 1st night spent underneath the famous St Lucian Pitons, we set sail for Bequia, a beautiful island that is part of St Vincent and the Grenadines. Not only did we have a great sail (see photos of arrival in Bequia in our photo gallery), we had some great wildlife surprises: we hooked another Marlin (but this time didn’t reel in - see the ARC 2007 blog for more on reeling in big fish!), had an early morning visit from some dolphins and were welcomed by a turtle after dropping our hook in the gentle Admiral’s Bay.

We spent a couple of days exploring Bequia and it is like stepping back in time: being here and talking to the amazing locals, you can easily imagine how things must have been when you sailed into this bay 50 years ago, when hardly anybody visited here. It has made for a decidedly different but fantastic Christmas feeling!

But there is more to see, and we plotted a course for Dominica, with a short stop in St Lucia. Another amazing trip, when during the sunset off Martinique we not only had great views, but also a visit from a pod of about 10 dolphins jumping and darting around the boat for about half an hour! Needless to say we arrived elated in Dominica.

Dominica is covered in green hills and rivers and is just begging to be explored: a trip up the Indian River and into the Rainforest made us vow to come back here and explore more. But Dominica’s greatest draw is its people: friendly as ever and always willing to tell you proudly about their island and their fellow Dominicans with a never ending smile.
